The original passage begins: "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..." A typesetter in the 1500s scrambled it to create a type specimen book. The scrambled version — starting with "Lorem ipsum" — became the printing industry's standard dummy text and survived into the digital age.

Why it works: Latin looks like English from a distance (same alphabet, similar word lengths, similar letter frequency) but is not readable by English speakers. This is the key insight: placeholder text should look like real text without being readable. If you use "Content goes here, this is where the heading will be, the client will provide this later" — stakeholders read it. They comment on it. They ask "is this the actual copy?" Lorem ipsum prevents this because nobody reads Latin. The visual texture is preserved; the content is invisible.

When lorem ipsum is the right choice

Early-stage wireframes and mockups: the layout is being decided. Font sizes, line heights, column widths, spacing — these need realistic text to evaluate. Lorem ipsum provides exactly the right visual weight without distracting anyone with meaning. Generate 2-3 paragraphs for body text, 3-5 words for headings, and 10-15 words for subheadings.

Client presentations where copy is pending: the client needs to approve the design direction. If you use real copy, the meeting becomes about word choices. If you use lorem ipsum, the meeting stays about design. This is the single most practical benefit — it keeps stakeholders focused on what you are actually presenting.

Font and typography testing: you are comparing two fonts and need to see how they handle real text density. Lorem ipsum provides consistent, neutral text that reveals kerning issues, line spacing problems, and readability differences without the content influencing your judgment.

When real copy beats lorem ipsum

Final design reviews: once the layout is approved, replace lorem ipsum with real copy. Real headlines are shorter or longer than placeholder ones. Real paragraphs have different rhythm. A design that looks perfect with lorem ipsum can break with real content — a headline that wraps to 3 lines instead of 1, a bullet list where items are uneven lengths. Test with real copy before development handoff.

Content-heavy pages: a blog post template, a product description page, an FAQ section. These live and die by their content. Designing them with lorem ipsum is designing in the dark — you are making layout decisions without knowing the content structure. Get real copy, or at least structurally realistic copy (actual questions for FAQ, actual product specs for product pages).

Accessibility testing: screen readers read lorem ipsum as Latin. This tells you nothing about how a real user would experience the page. For accessibility reviews, use real or realistic copy in the correct language.

SEO-critical pages: placeholder text on a landing page that accidentally goes live is an SEO disaster. Google indexes lorem ipsum, ranks it for nothing, and your page looks abandoned. Always replace placeholder text before publishing — and double-check that no lorem ipsum survived into production.
