Lorem Ipsum Isn't Latin: The 2,000-Year-Old Text Hiding in Every Mockup

You've pasted lorem ipsum into mockups for years without reading a single word of it. Then one slow afternoon you actually look at a line: Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet. It half-resembles Latin, which makes sense — and then you learn where it came from, and it stops making sense entirely. The scrambled text filling every wireframe and poster draft on the internet is the wreckage of a 45 BC philosophy essay about pain.
A 2,000-Year-Old Run-On Sentence
Lorem ipsum descends from De finibus bonorum et malorum — "On the Ends of Good and Evil" — by the Roman statesman Cicero, written in 45 BC. The passage that survives begins with the ideas of a philosopher arguing that pain is to be avoided, and ends with a sentence whose modern translation is basically "there is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain." A printer in the 1500s who wanted to show off a typeface without cluttering the specimen with readable text took that essay, scrambled the words, and truncated it — and the scrambled version stuck. What you see in a mockup is a corrupted, randomized excerpt of an argument about suffering.
Why It Looks Like Latin but Isn't
The counter-intuitive part: lorem ipsum is deliberately unreadable. The standard passage was corrupted enough that no one can parse it as a sentence, and that's exactly the point. Placeholder text exists so the reader judges the layout, not the meaning. When you use real text, the eye drifts to the words — stakeholders critique the copy instead of the spacing.
