A QR code that is too small, too low-contrast, or printed on a curved surface will not scan. Here's how to design scannable codes that actually work in the real world.

You generate a QR code for a marketing flyer. It looks perfect on your screen. You print 5,000 copies. The QR code does not scan on any of them. The problem: the code is printed at 1×1 cm — too small. The contrast is too low — the printer's ink made dark modules lighter and the paper's off-white made the background darker. Error correction was set to L (7%) — not enough to compensate. Three design choices. Three failures. Five thousand unusable flyers.

A QR code generator and a barcode generator create scannable codes. But designing codes that actually scan in the real world — on paper, on products, in variable lighting, at different distances — requires following specific guidelines. Here is the design guide for scannable codes.

QR Code Design Guidelines

Size: Minimum size = scanning distance ÷ 10. A code scanned from 10 cm away needs to be at least 1×1 cm. Scanned from 1 meter away needs to be at least 10×10 cm. Measure the expected scanning distance. Divide by 10. That is the minimum size.

Contrast: Dark modules on a light background. Black on white is ideal. Dark blue on light gray usually works. Light gray on white does not. Red on green does not work for color-blind users. The safe choice: black on white.

Quiet zone: A white border around the code equal to 4 modules wide. Without it, the scanner cannot identify where the code begins and ends. Do not crop into the quiet zone.

Error correction: L (7%) for screen display. M (15%) for flat print. Q (25%) for products that may get scratched. H (30%) for harsh environments. Higher correction = denser code. For most print, M or Q is right.

Barcode Design Guidelines

Orientation: Barcode bars run perpendicular to the long edge of the product. A horizontal barcode is scanned by a vertical laser. Do not rotate unless the scanning system expects it.

Color: Dark bars on a light background. Never white bars on dark — most scanners cannot read reversed barcodes. Never red bars — many laser scanners use red light, invisible against red.

Placement: Flat, smooth surfaces only. Avoid: curved surfaces (distorts bar widths), edges and corners (wrapping), and textured surfaces (interferes with laser reflection). On a product, place on the back or bottom — flat and unobstructed.
