Roman Numerals: Where They Still Show Up and Why We Haven't Abandoned Them

The year is 2026, and the Super Bowl is called "Super Bowl LX." Movie credits end with "Copyright MMXXVI." Your watch has "IV" instead of "4." Roman numerals should have died 1,500 years ago when Arabic numerals took over mathematics. But they did not. They survived in specific niches where they do something Arabic numerals cannot: they make numbers look important. Where Roman numerals still rule

Super Bowls and sporting events. The NFL uses Roman numerals for the Super Bowl because it makes the event look grander. "Super Bowl 60" sounds like a number. "Super Bowl LX" sounds like an institution. The Olympics and WrestleMania do the same thing. It is branding, not mathematics.

Copyright dates. Movie and TV credits use Roman numerals for the copyright year. "MMXXVI" looks more formal and permanent than "2026." It is a legal convention that became an aesthetic one — the Roman numerals signal "this is an official, protected work."

Book chapters and outlines. Chapter I, Chapter II, Chapter III. Roman numerals distinguish major sections from sub-sections (which use Arabic numerals or letters). The visual hierarchy — Roman for top level, Arabic for second level, lowercase letters for third — makes document structure scannable at a glance.

Clocks and watches. Many analog watches use Roman numerals on the dial. "IV" for 4, "IX" for 9, "XII" for 12. It is purely aesthetic — a Roman numeral clock face looks more classic and traditional than an Arabic numeral one. The convention is so strong that digital watch faces often include a Roman numeral option.

Monarchs and popes. Queen Elizabeth II, Pope John XXIII, King Charles III. Roman numerals in regnal names are a thousand-year tradition. They distinguish rulers with the same name and imply continuity with the past. "Charles the Third" and "Charles III" mean the same thing, but the Roman numeral version is what appears on coins, stamps, and official documents.

How to read Roman numerals in 30 seconds

The system uses seven letters: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. Numbers are formed by combining these letters. The key rule: if a smaller value comes before a larger one, subtract; if it comes after, add.

  • IV = 5 − 1 = 4 (I before V, subtract)
  • VI = 5 + 1 = 6 (I after V, add)
  • IX = 10 − 1 = 9
  • XL = 50 − 10 = 40
  • MCMXCIX = 1000 + (1000−100) + (100−10) + (10−1) = 1999

Why Roman numerals survived when other ancient systems died

Roman numerals survived because they transitioned from a practical tool (Roman merchants used them for accounting) to a prestige marker (medieval scribes used them for important documents) to an aesthetic convention (modern designers use them because they look good).

They are terrible for calculation — try multiplying XIV by XXVII in your head. That is why Arabic numerals replaced them for mathematics.
