Stop Googling Each Unit Conversion One at a Time — Here Is the Faster Way
Celsius to Fahrenheit. Kilograms to pounds. Liters to gallons. Five conversions means five Google tabs. Here is how to do them all in one place.
I Googled five conversions yesterday. Celsius to Fahrenheit for a recipe. Kilograms to pounds for shipping. Kilometers to miles for a road trip. Liters to gallons for a water tank. Each one was a separate search tab. An online unit converter would have done all five in one place.
Unit conversion is not hard math. It is annoying math. The kind you get wrong when converting 180 Celsius to Fahrenheit in your head while the oven is preheating. The formula is multiply by 9/5 and add 32. Except when you are converting to Celsius, then it is subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. Nobody remembers which direction is which at 7 AM.
The Conversions People Get Wrong Most Often
Fluid ounces are not the same everywhere. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 milliliters. A UK fluid ounce is 28.41 milliliters. If you follow a British recipe with US measuring cups, every liquid ingredient is slightly off. One ingredient is not a problem. A cake with six slightly-off liquid measurements is a disaster.
Counter-intuitive: rounding conversions is fine for weather. It is not fine for baking, chemistry, or anything where precision matters. A 180 Celsius oven is exactly 356 Fahrenheit. Setting it to 350 because that is the closest round number produces underbaked results. Convert precisely. Make rounding decisions consciously, not accidentally.
Gallons Are Also Not the Same
A US gallon is 3.785 liters. A UK gallon is 4.546 liters. If a British car review says 40 miles per gallon, and you think in US gallons, the fuel economy is actually 33 US mpg — a 17 percent difference. The unit converter handles US/UK distinctions for fluid ounces, gallons, and pints automatically. No mental math required.
