Reaction Time Test — Average Human vs Pro Gamer vs F1 Driver, What Your Score Actually Means

You Google "average reaction time" and get: 250ms for visual stimuli. You are slightly above average. But what does that actually mean — and more importantly, can you improve it?

The reaction time tier list

350ms+ (Below average): reaction time slows with age, fatigue, alcohol, and distraction. A score consistently above 350ms on a simple visual test suggests you are tired, distracted, or testing on a device with significant input lag (older phones, Bluetooth mice, remote desktop connections). Test again when alert and on a wired connection.

250-300ms (Average human): this is the normal range for a healthy adult responding to a simple visual stimulus. Most people score here. At this speed, you can react to a brake light in traffic (about 1.5 seconds of margin at highway speeds) and catch a falling object if you are paying attention.

200-250ms (Above average): consistent scores in this range indicate good alertness and fast neural processing. Competitive gamers typically score here. At 200ms, you have a noticeable edge in any activity where reaction speed matters — gaming, martial arts, goalkeeping in soccer.

150-200ms (Elite): professional esports players (Counter-Strike, League of Legends pros) score in this range. F1 drivers score 180-220ms on visual reaction tests. This is near the physiological limit for visual reaction time — the signal has to travel from your eyes to your brain to your finger, and that physical distance takes about 100-150ms minimum. Nobody scores below 100ms on a visual reaction test without anticipating (guessing when the green light will appear).

Below 150ms (Anticipation, not reaction): if you consistently score below 150ms, you are not reacting — you are predicting. Your brain has learned the rhythm of the test and is clicking before the green appears. This is a real phenomenon in sports (a tennis player "reading" the serve starts moving before the ball is hit) and gaming (pre-firing a corner before seeing the enemy). Anticipation is a real skill — but it is not reaction time. True reaction tests randomize the interval between red and green to prevent anticipation.

How trainable is reaction time?

The honest answer: not very. Simple visual reaction time is about 50% genetic (determined by nerve conduction velocity and brain processing speed) and 50% environmental (sleep, caffeine, fitness, age). You can optimize the environmental 50% — sleep 8 hours, stay hydrated, moderate caffeine helps, regular exercise improves nerve function. But you cannot train your way from 250ms to 180ms. The genetic ceiling is real.

What IS trainable: choice reaction time — the ability to make the correct response to one of several possible stimuli. In a real game or sport, you are not just reacting to "something happened" — you are identifying what happened and choosing the right response. This is far more trainable than simple reaction time and matters more in practice. A soccer goalkeeper with 250ms simple reaction time who reads the shooter's body language correctly will outperform a goalkeeper with 180ms simple reaction time who guesses wrong.

What also improves: removing input lag. Testing on a 144Hz monitor with a wired mouse produces scores 20-40ms faster than testing on a 60Hz phone screen with a Bluetooth connection. The hardware matters as much as your nervous system for online reaction tests.
